Jude sipped his coffee. The sun was out. The water sparkling. Gentle waves lapped at the rocks. A slight warm breeze coated his arms. As peaceful as the morning was, meant to soothe, he shifted in the chair again.

Dad puffed on his cigarette, curiously peering.

There was no easy way to say this. “Raven knows the truth about you and Mrs. Kabatay.”

A big sigh heaved from Dad’s mouth. He wiped at his face. “I see...” He butted out the cigarette in the ashtray.

The only sound was the water continuing to lap against the rocks.

After a few more moments, and Dad staring off at the lake, he finally looked at Jude through weary eyes. “Then I best talk to your mother. Better she hears the truth from me than around the reserve.”

“I think you’re right. Clayton’ll... considering the rumors he started about Darryl, I can imagine what he’ll try say about you.”

Dad nodded and grimaced.

A snort barreled from Jude’s mouth. “Raven... she’s...”

“Easy.” Dad reached for his coffee, shoulders still sagging, gaze still weary. “It’ll take her time to come around. She’s had a lot to digest. A lot. Finding out how she was conceived was bad enough. As for this...” He shook his head.

“You weren’t there. You didn’t hear what she said.” Jude’s gut burned. “She... she’s not the Raven I—”

“And she wasn’t blessed with a good family who loves her simply for being herself. Arlene...” Dad sipped his coffee and made a face, as if he’d drunk moose pee. “The Kabatays have lived a hard life. Especially Arlene. I know she blames me for how her life turned out. And I know she resents your mother for... well, for being the woman I chose to marry.”

“When are you gonna tell Mom?”

“The sooner the better. I’ll speak to her this afternoon after she’s done cleaning. She’s storing away the winter clothes this morning.” Dad’s voice was as heavy as his heavy-looking shoulders.

“Did you need me there?”

“No.” Dad let out another big breath. “They’re some conversations a married couple need to speak about alone. I know she’ll be... hurt. Hurt about who I... the women I hurt. She knows I wasn’t the most faithful man in my day. She doesn’t know who I was unfaithful to, or the woman I was unfaithful with.”

“Do you think she’ll be pissed?”

“I don’t know.” Dad rubbed his brow. “It’s in the past. My past. But your mother’s an understanding woman. Understanding enough to put up with me.” He smiled weakly, but his eyes continued to wilt at the corners.

“I know after Bridget made us grandparents again, your mother wanted to stay in Thunder Bay to help her. She’s only here because of me. Maybe I’ll suggest she help Bridget for a couple of weeks until this all dies down.”
